It’s been a long time coming, but my time as a Minecraft mod maker is going to be drawing to a close.
Firstly I want to be very clear it’s nothing related to any particular drama/etc that’s going on. This is a personal decision and really has more to do with me wanting to have fun again, and spend more time with my family. Life has gotten really busy for me in the past several months and it has been hard to find the inspiration or desire to sit down after the end of a long day to write code. Doing mods changed from just being a hobby to a second job, and frankly I don’t find enough hours in the day to get everything I want done done. This year I want to enjoy my free time again. I want to be able to hang out with my family and friends without worrying about the code I should be writing. I want to be able to play games with my friends when they come out, rather than when I finally have time 6 months later. I want to play Minecraft again. I want to spend time with my wife. So I need to take a step back from my responsibilities.
What does this mean for Equivalent Exchange? I still intend to release Equivalent Exchange 3 for Minecraft 1.6.4 (possibly Minecraft 1.7 depending on the effort), but after that I will no longer be involved in making mods for Minecraft. I don’t know when this will be, but I will continue to finish this mod because I promised I would. After it’s release I will talk with x3n0ph0b3 about the possibility of me updating Equivalent Exchange 2 to Minecraft 1.6.4 and releasing the mod open source (that’s his decision to make, not mine).
When I started out writing Equivalent Exchange 3 I specifically selected an open source license for it so that people could learn from it, people could contribute to it, and so that one day I could walk away from it and know that the community had the ability to continue with it if they wanted. So don’t worry, I’m sure someone will pick up the torch. I even have a developer in mind that I wouldn’t have any issue with continuing with the mod as well (we’ll see what he thinks of that though).
As for Let’s Mod, I think it’s going to be safe to say that won’t be continuing after all. There are plenty of other resources out there for learning how to mod and this was the first side project of mine to really suffer from my lack of time to invest in it. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to make it what I wanted it to be; I bite off more than I could chew. ForgeCraft will continue to exist as long as the folks on it want to continue playing on it.
As for all the friends and fans I have met through this two year journey, I appreciate and love you all. I really do. I have learned so much from you all, and got to share in some incredible memories and fun times. I will still exist in the community and take part in things – I’m just not going to be modding anymore after EE3 is released.
I don’t know if I’ll try streaming, or Let’s Plays, or whatever – but I will still be around. You are all too fun to not hang out with. This isn’t goodbye 🙂
Love you all,
